Restoring Americans' Retirement Security: A Shared Responsibility

The recent financial crisis reinforced the need for individuals to take responsibility for their retirement security. Yet despite a heightened sense of urgency, most Americans remain unprepared for retirement. This new study by McKinsey & Company reveals that while the decline in the stock market took a toll on consumers’ retirement portfolios, it is not the dominant driver of their lack of retirement readiness. Americans Put Retirement Plans on Autopilot

Automatic enrollment in 401(k) plans is gaining in popularity, even as the stock-market crash wiped out more than $1 trillion in retirement accounts, two studies show. Automatic enrollment could boost 401(k) participation rates from a national average of about 75% of eligible employees to as much as 95%. TheStreet.com

How Prepared Are Your Employees for Retirement?

The results of Aon Consulting’s 2009 Benefits and Talent Survey provide a glimpse into the strategies and tactics companies are using to ensure that they continue to improve talent, reward success, and prepare for economic recovery. Among the key retirement findings: The vast majority of respondents are not changing their retirement programs in response to the economic downturn. Most defined contribution plan sponsors have not made changes to their benefits, with 90% reporting no change in 2009 contribution levels compared to last year.
