GAO Study: Automatic Feature Boosts 401k Participation

In a recently released Government Accountability Office (GAO) report automatic enrollment of workers in 401(k) plans is highlighted as an effective means of increasing plan participation rates. However, the report does raise several concerns, notably that not all employees have access to employer-sponsored plans and that low default contributions rates and the absence of default automatic escalation policies may result in inadequate long-term savings for some workers.
